What is 'The Sophie Spencer Scholarship'?

‘The Sophie Spencer Scholarship’ is an exciting opportunity for a talented local student to access high quality performing arts training for a full year for FREE! It is awarded to a promising student that is not currently enrolled for Macclesfield Musical Theatre Troupe (MMTT).

The scholarship will be awarded to one student following an informal application and audition process. Applications will initially be narrowed down to a 'Top 3' and, from there, a judging panel of performing arts professionals will decide the student to be awarded ‘The Sophie Spencer Scholarship’.

The scholarship is in the memory of Sophie Spencer who tragically died in 2014. Sophie was a talented performer who loved to sing, act and dance. Our 2021 Winner

Our 2021 winner of The Sophie Spencer Scholarship, Fin Watts was extremely popular with our judging panel last year. In their feedback, they complimented Fin on his “great stage presence”, “real natural talent for dancing” and added that they “felt the joy and happiness with every step” that he danced! Well done, Fin!

Over the last year, Fin has gone from strength-to-strength during his time at MMTT. Fin auditioned successfully and was cast in a number of additional pieces for our first MMTT show, ‘There’s No Business Like Snow Business!’ where he showcased his dancing, singing and acting skills. Fin has also taken on the role of Musical Theatre Rep at MMTT, assists Nicola in Musical Theatre classes, created and runs our MMTT TikTok account, and won ‘Star of the Term’ for the Autumn Term 2021! Fin is such a valuable part of our Principals troupe and the MMTT Team.

FAQs

I don’t know what pieces to do for my audition. What should I do?

If you are struggling with finding suitable audition pieces, you could speak to one of your teachers or, alternatively, you can email Nicola on hello@nicolacrooks.co.uk for assistance.

I am only confident in one discipline. Can I still apply?

Of course! Showcase your strongest discipline and then do your best with a second discipline. We are not looking for perfection or a finished “product”. We are looking for passion, determination, enthusiasm and potential. Have fun with it!

I applied last year. Can I apply again?

Yes, definitely! We’d love to see how you have progressed over the last year!

I used to attend MMTT but I am not currently enrolled. Am I allowed to apply?

Yes. The rules have changed this year and, providing you meet the rest of the applicant criteria, you are more than welcome to apply.

I am not available on Sundays. Should I still apply?

Unfortunately, all MMTT rehearsals take place on a Sunday for 3 terms per year so, if you are not available on this day, there is no point in you applying. If you availability changes in the future, feel free to apply for the scholarship another year!

Can I ask somebody to help me with my audition videos?

Yes! Of course you can! This is proactive and shows great initiative.

Do I need to be in costume for my auditions?

No. This is just an informal audition process so we can see your potential and your personality. Just make sure that you are comfortable and confident in whatever you are wearing.

My audition video files are too big to email. How should I send them?

You have a few options here:

1. You could use www.wetransfer.com to transfer larger files for free.

2. Videos can be sent to Nicola via What’s App on 07800959951.

3. You could upload your files to Google Drive or Dropbox and email across the link.

Will I receive any feedback for my audition?

Yes. All judges will provide short, written feedback for each of the Top 3 auditionees.

If I do not get selected for the ‘Top 3’ this year, can I re-apply next year?

You most certainly can. We love to see past applicants returning to showcase what they have learnt.
